Laundry Room Hours

The laundry room in my building’s basement is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. A couple of years ago, we added an hour to the evening closing time so people who got home late from work could still do a load or two if needed. The problem is that the sign down there (with the laundry room rules and all that stuff) still lists the hours as 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. This little inconsistency has been bothering me for a while now — like basically since we changed the hours. Not really bothering me, but just enough to cause a little persistent buzzing in the back of my brain. I mean, what if a new resident went down there and got the wrong impression? Or someone forgot the real hours and became panicked by the misinformation? All hell could break loose: TV shows could be missed, socks could disappear!!!
Today I finally did something about it. I took a ruler to the sign and measured the numbers (1-1/2″ high), as well as trying to identify the font used (Gill Sans Extended). Then I marched back upstairs, created a 1-1/2″-high-Gill Sans Extended “10” on my computer and printed it out. I carefully cut out the “10”, headed back downstairs, and rubber cemented it over the offending “9”. Unless you’re specifically looking for it, the patch is undetectable.
There had been a disconnect between reality — truth — and the sign — a lie. Now there is agreement; all is right with the world.
P.S. It’s not like I’ve got too much time on my hands. I’m busy with a bunch of deadlines. It was just that buzzing in the back of my brain. 20 minutes is a small price to get things purring along smoothly again, don’t you think?
